Title 1

What is the Title 1 Program?

Title 1 is a part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act passed in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. The program was created to provide more funding to schools and districts with a high percentage of low-income families to ensure quality education for their students. At HSA McKinley Park, the Title 1 program specifically assists students who need academic support to succeed in math and reading/writing.

Who Qualifies for Title 1 Services?

Students in their general education classes of Math or ELA class take assessment as well as students take the NWEA MAP test early into the school year. Based on those scores your child could be below, at, or above grade level in Math or ELA. If your child scores below grade level or teacher finds deficiencies in reading or Math your child can qualify if not qualifies for this service. These subjects are scored separately. This means that your child could qualify for Math and not ELA or vice versa. However, they may also receive services for both subjects as well. Our main goal is to get the student to grade level. We will do this one period a day bringing a group of students into the Title 1 classroom or we will push in and the classroom with them helping as needed. Based on progress monitoring and assessment, your child may reach grade level before the next NWEA MAP test session and they will test out of Title 1 services.
