CHICAGO––A new era at Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park officially commenced on Aug. 12 as the school unveiled its new campus for 9-12th graders ahead of the academic year.
A group of around 100 people (including 11th Ward Alderwoman Nicole Lee and representatives from the Archdiocese) joined HSA's ribbon cutting ceremony that introduced Bridgeport's first high school in nearly a decade.
After years of community outreach and advocacy, HSA's principal Seat Vedziovski was glowing with pride as he thanked everyone for helping executing the vision him and his team have had for providing the school's high schoolers with their own space.
"This is truly a special moment at Bridgeport," Vedziovski said ahead of the ribbon cutting. "This was something that was needed––something that made sense for this community and it finally came true. I'm very proud to be principal of this institution."

Following the ribbon cutting, attendees got a chance to tour the new building that features revamped classrooms, a retouched gymnasium, and brand new signage. With its fresh look, the school opened today and will serve around 400 students.
Lee, who was a central voice in advocating for HSA to move into the neighborhood, reflected on all of the work and effort that came before this monumental moment for Bridgeport.
"This has been a long time coming," Lee told the crowd. "This has been a journey that has been going on for over a year. This didn't go through the first time but the grit and determination of Concept charter schools and Horizon Science Academy to make this campus come to life is a great example for your students.
"Persistence counts. Persistence will get you far and, if there is a chance, there is always hope. I'm so proud to have been a part of making this high school a reality."
The school is still adding to its new home but the excitement has already trickled through the building after staff members got to see the campus during their professional development sessions last week.
"I can't wait to see the kids' faces when they come through the door," Vedziovski said on Aug. 12.
